Meat Draft?

Starting a draft is quick and easy. Pick and name and a date you're on your way. By starting the draft you've become the draft administrator. You don't have to do much but you do have to do something. Basically:

1 - Choose a draft name and date

2 - Select a few initial options

3 - Invite others to join the draft

4 - Link a local vendor to the draft

5 - Add cuts of meat (or upload list)

6 - Bid the cuts of meat like everyone else

7 - Modify the draft options for the group

8 - Run mock drafts along with the group

9 - See the draft day results and smack talk your friends

10 - Track who's paid and who's a deadbeat

All your friends have to do is join the draft using the draft link/code provided, bid on cuts of meat, and send the administrator the money to pay for their share.

Administer the Draft

Someone has to be in charge. It just makes everything easier. It isn’t a difficult job but it makes sure only one person is modifying the draft options instead of having them change depending on which person was the last to log in. Select someone to initiate the draft by creating a draft name and selecting the draft options. Only the draft administrator can change the draft option but all participants can see the selections.

Everyone in the draft can run a mock draft to see how they will fair in the final draft. That will give them a better idea of what options they'd like to change. The most important part of a draft is to get a date set, friends invited and the cuts information from the vendor/rancher. Once that's in place the real fun can begin.



Vendor Selection

Meat Draft has listings for ranchers and farmers selling quality meat in many locations. The listings can be browsed by location and sorted by user ratings. The vendor profile will list the meats being offered and methods to contact them. Price and deliver date can be worked out with the rancher. Vendors listed on Meat Draft are encouraged to provide a spreadsheet of the cuts provided but there's no guarantee. The price paid can be entered in Meat Draft to help track how the cost is to be divided and who's paid.

Invitation and Admission

Once a draft has been created other participants can be invited to join the draft. To do this the additional participants simply need to know the draft name and apply for admission after making an account. The administrator of the draft will need to accept or admit the participant to complete entry or deny the petition. Meat Draft can email a list of participants or the draft name can be passed by word of mouth.

Draft Name and Options

Choose a draft name to identify your draft. The administrator will create the name when the draft is created. The administrator will also select the draft options and only the administrator can change the draft option All participants can see the selections and can run a mock draft to see what the end result could look like (depending on some of the advanced options). Likely there will be those that try to influence the administrator to select different options. Draft options include the meat selection, draft type, drafting order, vendor selection, and payment options.

Meat types currently available are beef, pork, and lamb. The exact cuts of meat depend on the vendor that is chosen. Looking to use Meat Draft to divide up a deer, elk, moose, or buffalo? Select ‘other’ under meat type and enter in the meat cuts manually.

You may be wondering where those cut of meat come from. The administrator can either enter the names and weights of each cut or they can upload a spreadsheet with that information on it. Ideally, a vendor found via Meat Draft will provide a spreadsheet but each vendor is different. Also, you have the flexibility to divide/draft anything you want. You can draft the delicious cuts from a half steer or bid on jelly beans. Whatever!



Basics of Blind/Open Draft Option

How does a draft work? Prior to the draft date, each participant enters a ranking for each cut of meat, from their first to last preference. When the draft occurs the first person in the draft will receive their first choice. The second person will receive their first choice unless it is the same as the first user. In that case, the second user will receive their second choice instead. The draft proceeds in a like manner until all cuts of meat are drafted. The drafting order is controlled by the drafting options as mentioned previously. Several methods for sorting and drafting are described in the options section of the draft.

The draft type can be Blind or Open. In a blind draft each participant enters a ranking for each cut of meat, from their first to last preference, without seeing the preferences of other users. This increases the uncertainty of the result by not allowing one user to game the system and may be a more honest assessment of what the participants actually want. In an open draft the participants can see the rankings of all the other participants. Once a participant sees the results of a mock draft they will likely adjust their rankings to get what they want. It can be fluid with changes constantly being made right up to the draft date. This provides an opportinuty for last minute surprises.

Advanced Options

Once the meat cuts and weights have been entered and the draft participants have had a chance to bid on the meat and evaluate their drafting position it's time to take a look at the advanced options. The draft order sets the order in which participants draft their cuts of meat and plays a large part in which cuts of meat are acquired. The order can be set using a number of different sorting tools or set arbitrarily by the administrator or adjusted in case of exceptions. Draft and Pay for Meat

At the selected date and time the final draft occurs and all cuts of meat are apportioned to the draft participants. The draft will then be listed in the Completed Drafts section and the results can be scrutinized further. As with the mock draft, links are provided to see the details of how the draft occurred. A payment tracking page is provided to keep tabs on who's paid and link to payment sites like PayPal and Venmo. Direct payment can also be entered.
